Urban Development Minister Assures Policy-Level Intervention for Street Vendors in Delhi

New Delhi, May 26, 2025 — In a significant development for the street vendor community of Delhi, Shri Asish Sood, the Urban Development Minister, Delhi, has assured that the government will take concrete steps to address the ongoing evictions of street vendors across the city.

The assurance came during a meeting with a delegation from the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI), led by national co ordinator Mr Arbind Singh which raised concerns about the increasing number of forced evictions, harassment, and lack of implementation of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014.

Minister Sood acknowledged the importance of protecting the livelihoods of street vendors and committed to taking up the matter at the policy level. He asked NASVI delegation to prepare a blueprint for regulation of street vendors of Delhi . He also spoke of a meeting with Municipal and Police Staff on this issue

Arbind Singh, National Coordinator of NASVI, welcomed the Minister’s assurance, stating:
“Street vendors are the backbone of urban informal economies. We are encouraged by the Minister’s commitment and look forward to swift action that translates into real change on the ground.”

NASVI has been consistently advocating for the effective implementation of the Street Vendors Act and immediate stoppage on eviction of street vendors.
