NASVI at NHRC

A delegation of street vendors, led by the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI), met with Shri Joginder Singh, Registrar (Law), National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today to raise serious concerns over the ongoing eviction drives being carried out against street vendors in Delhi.

The delegation highlighted the persistent violation of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, and sought immediate intervention from the Commission. The vendors expressed that despite clear legal protections, they continue to face harassment and displacement, severely affecting their livelihoods.

In response, Shri Joginder Singh assured the delegation that the NHRC will take appropriate action and initiate a complaint to address the matter with urgency. He has asked for details of complaints by each street vendor

Arbind Singh, National Coordinator of NASVI, emphasized the critical need for protection and implementation of vendor rights. He said, “Street vendors are not encroachers—they are entrepreneurs and essential contributors to the city’s economy. It’s time the authorities recognize their rights and stop these arbitrary evictions that threaten their survival and dignity.”

NASVI has called for strict enforcement of the law, the formation of Town Vending Committees, and a moratorium on evictions until proper rehabilitation measures are put in place.
