Street Vendors of Saket & Shahdara South Face Continuous Harassment Despite Legal Rights

New Delhi, June 13, 2025 — The street vendors of Saket and Shahdara South especially in areas of laxmi nagar, nirman viahr and others are facing relentless harassment and eviction drives by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and local police authorities. These vendors, who have been operating in the area for years, contribute significantly to the local economy and provide essential services to thousands of residents and commuters. Despite the availability of designated footpath space and the protections guaranteed under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, they are being pushed out without due process.

These vendors not only sustain themselves but also generate employment for many others—workers, suppliers, and more. The repeated removal of their stalls and seizure of goods threatens their right to livelihood and dignity.  These vendors hold Certificates of Vending (CoVs) under the Act, yet their legal status is being ignored.

Commenting on the issue, Arbind Singh, National Coordinator of the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI), said:
“This constant harassment of street vendors in Saket and other parts of delhi are not only illegal but inhuman. These vendors have a right to work and live with dignity. The authorities must stop this misuse of power and ensure proper implementation of the Street Vendors Act. NASVI stands firmly with these vendors and will continue to fight for their rights.”

NASVI urges the Delhi Government, MCD, and Delhi Police to immediately halt these unlawful actions and initiate dialogue with the vendor community to find a fair and sustainable solution.
