INDU PRAKASH SINGH

Indu prakash singh is a human rights defender, socio-spiritual activist, poet, author, a feminist, a TEDX  Speaker and a PRA/ PLA practitioner / facilitator, is currently Consultant with large number of development organisations. indu was invited by the Institute of Global Homelessness (IGH, since 2015), Chicago to be part of the Civil Society Forum, under the aegis of the UN’s Commission for Social Development (CSocD). He spoke in the UN Headquarters, New York on 13th-14th Feb., 2020 highlighting the issues faced by the homeless (CityMakers) in India, which was very much appreciated by all present.

MD AALEY MOHD IQBAL

MD. Aaley Mohammad Iqbal, a 33-year-old politician from Old Delhi, is the current Deputy Mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation. He has been elected for Delhi MCD three times in 2012, 2017, and 2022.He is also the President of the All India Crossminton Organization.
At 22, MD. Iqbal made his debut in the MCD by winning the 2012 election from Turkman Gate. He was chairman of the City Sadar Paharganj Zone. In the 2022 Delhi MCD elections, He won the elections with the highest margin of 17134 votes and was nominated for the post of Deputy Mayor of MCD. He is a keen supporter of street vendors and their livelihood. He has been instrumental in supporting this food festival as a zero waste event.

DR. GOPAL KRISHNA

Dr. Gopal Krishna’s has been working with environmental issues since 2000. He is the editor of www.toxicswatch.org, a web journal. He is the co-founder of ToxicsWatch Alliance (TWA), East India Research Council (EIRC), Ban Asbestos Network of India (BANI) and Citizens Forum for Civil Liberties (CFCL). His post doctoral work was conducted with Berlin based faculty of law, Humboldt University, IRGAC and Tata Institute of Social Sciences. His seminal doctoral work was done on the subject of “Corporate Crimes, Public Institutions and Their Accountability: An Inquiry into the Industrial Disaster of Bhopal” at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He is a public interest lawyer and researcher with avid interest in justice and philosophy. He has given expert testimonies to European, German and Indian parliamentary committees which dealt with environment, biological diversity, consumer protection, transport and shipping. He has been speaking at international and national institutions like House of Commons in Canada, George Washington University, Tokyo University, Delhi University, National Disaster Response Force Academy, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, Forest Research Institute, Dehradun.

AMITA PURI

Amita has over two decades of experience in the Indian development space, and has been exposed to, and worked in the areas of child rights, gender, livelihoods, and business and human rights. Her roles have included developing organizational sustainability strategies and being involved in the raising of funds from individual, corporate and institutional donors, both in India and overseas; as well as promoting and influencing philanthropy for social justice issues and supporting the development of an ecosystem for it.

Her last few full time roles included being  Executive Director, Fundraising, Marketing and Communications at CARE India. Previously, she worked as Executive Director, All India Artisans and Craftworkers Welfare Association-AIACA; CEO, Charities Aid Foundation, India.

Amita has also worked directly with communities as well as with grantees to facilitate change and been involved in capacity building and institution strengthening work; and on collaborative models. She currently works as an independent consultant. and partners with diverse stakeholders, both within and outside the country.

Simultaneously, he is Co-Founder of an organization “Save Mother Earth Mission”, which started in August 2020. He is now playing a leading & pivotal role in the growth of this organization. Currently, around 250 Societies & College / Schools / Industries /Other Institutions are supporting the “Save Mother Other Mission” and more than  15,000 Persons are working on this. During Last 3 Years, this mission has got more tha 1,40,000 Kg Plastic Waste Recycled thereby saving the environment.

DR. SANJAY K GUPTA

Dr. Sanjay K Gupta has been working globally with waste, recycling, circularity, zero waste and Swachh Bharat Mission within the framework of Climate Change issues since 2000. He has been part of dozens of innovative initiatives that involved the informal sector waste workers improvement in livelihood, women entrepreneurship in waste, mass recycling campaigns, dustbin free cities, zero waste towns and zero waste schools and university campuses. He has helped Municipality and other organization in Guinness Book of World Records (Coimbatore) and in Limca Book of Records (Saluru & Tinsukia).He also has contributed to award winning reports like Global Waste Management Outlook, Status of Solid Waste in World Cities and Global Indicators for Solid waste Management. He returned from Switzerland on the request of the Assam Government to help contribute to Swachh Bharat Mission and credited with turning towns from dirtiest to fastest moving clean towns and zero waste schools and communities. He comes with direct experiences of implementing projects, executing innovative concepts and is advisor to state governments and municipalities for achieving Swachh Bharat Goals. He has many publications on waste in international and national journals of repute. He is a repeat speaker of TEDx talks. Currently he lives in Delhi. He has a Ph. D in Social Sciences from JNU and also completed waste management courses from Sweden and Egypt. In the lockdown he has been training communities in sanitation staff on occupational safety and health in Pandemic times – Covid19 and disaster situation. He has curated this even as the Zero Waste Event.

HARSHITA SEHGAL

SOURISH BHATTACHARYYA

Sourish Bhattacharyya is a veteran journalist with an impressive 38-year tenure in the field, currently serving as the Managing Editor at the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS). His career includes significant roles such as the Executive Editor of Mail Today, Associate Editor at Hindustan Times heading HT City, and National Features Editor at The Indian Express. Beyond journalism, Sourish is deeply invested in promoting Indian food culture and hospitality. DR. RUBY MAKHIJA

Dr. Ruby Makhijia is an Ophthalmologist by profession and also deeply associated with Why Waste Wednesdays Foundation. In association with MCD, she is involved in raising awareness against single-use plastic and reducing the use of SUP by translating awareness into practice and providing alternatives at sources. She has been instrumental in achieving 100% waste segregation at source in Navjeevan Vihar and maintaining the same for last 4 years. She has been carrying out 100% composting of organic waste in Navjeevan Vihar RWA. The colony has been successfully composting all their kitchen waste for last 4 years saving over 5 lakh kg of garbage from going to landfill sites. Since her association started, Navjeevan Vihar has been receiving first award in Swachhata Survekshan for last couple of years. Dr. Makhija has also bagged many awards and accolades for her work including one from Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, Delhi. Beside organic waste management, she is also involved in collection and upcycling of old bedsheets, curtains, sarees and dupattas for making cloth bags. She has upcycled and distributed over 10000 cloth bags to residents, domestic helps, construction site workers, JJ Clusters etc.

FAWZIA TARANNUM

Dr. Fawzia Tarannum is a Freelance Water and Sustainability Consultant who has made significant contributions to research, education, and community initiatives. Fawzia holds a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from Aligarh Muslim University, complemented by a Master’s in Water and Sustainable Development from the prestigious IHE Delft Institute of Water Education and a PhD in Water Governance from the TERI School of Advanced Studies. Additionally, she completed a one-year Graduate Certificate course in water and sanitation governance from Cornell  University. Fawzia has had a dynamic professional career. Her previous roles include serving as an Assistant Professor at the TERI School of Advanced Studies and holding the position of General Manager Marketing at Cleantec Infra Private Limited. She is a Co-Founder of the WforW Foundation and serves as a Strategic Advisor and Trustee at GuruJal. She also holds the position of National Coordinator for Water at The Climate Reality Project India and is an Invited Guest Faculty at Cornell University, contributing her expertise to the academic realm. Her commitment and contributions to sustainable development have earned her prestigious accolades, including the Fulbright Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship and the IDRC-University of Nairobi Doctoral Research Grant. Notably, she was recognized as one of the 17 SDGs Women Changemakers by Sayfty and Twitter India.

ASHISH JAIN

Ashish Jain is a Founder Director of Indian Pollution Control Association (NGO) and appointed as the expert member in various committee constituted by Central and States Govt. for improving the Solid Waste and Plastic Waste Management Rules. He is also appointed as Brand Ambassador by MCD Shhadara South Zone and having more than 23 years of professional experience in the field of Solid Waste Management, Air Pollution and Environment Education and published books,  research papers and articles on these subjects. He is NIUA certified trainer for solid waste management and conducted training programs for various stakeholders including ULBs’ and SPCBs’ enforcement personals for effective waste management practices and Rules. He is pioneer in conceiving and execution of EPR action plan for plastic waste management at pan India. His expertise lies in developing sustainable supply chain of waste, recycling of plastic waste and composting of organic waste. His professional work encompasses introduction of new technologies related to waste minimization, community engagement, promotion of recycling, and explore sustainable solutions for healthy society.

He has also established IPCA center for Waste Management & Research in collaboration with TERI School of Advance Studies and encouraging youngsters to become entrepreneurs in the field of Solid Waste Management.

ROHIT MASKARA

Rohit Maskara has more than 14 years of experience in various domain like Waste Management, Enterprise development, Financial Inclusion, etc. he is currently working as a Project Manager for Dry including Plastic Waste Management at Centre for Environment Education (CEE). Before this, he has worked as Project Officer on Plastic waste management at United Nations Development Program (UNDP) based in Delhi. He has experience working with organisations like HDFC, Emami and others.
Rohit is passionate about building multi-stakeholder, people-centric governance structures for Solid Waste Management implementation and strengthening the capacity of Urban Local Bodies and Grassroots Communities. Through his vast experience of working with grassroots institutes, he facilitated knowledge exchange for diverse stakeholder groups like NGOs, Government Officials, Communities at large, etc.
Rohit holds an MBA degree in Rural Management from KIIT School of Rural Management, Bhubaneshwar; a course on Municipal Solid Waste Management in Developing Countries and a course on Regional and Rural Development Planning  with the area of specialization in Rural Management from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok.
His interest areas include decentralized waste management, circular economy, micro enterprises development and a range of issues at the intersection of gender equality, women’s rights and climate justice.

SHABNAM HASHMI

Shabnam Hashmi is an Indian social activist and human rights campaigner, best known for her role in the draft committee of the “Communal Violence Bill”. Born in 1957, she began her activism in 1981, focusing on adult literacy. Since 1989, she has been fighting communal and fundamentalist forces in India. After the Gujarat riots of 2002, Hashmi changed her focus to grass-roots work and has worked in Gujarat. In 2003, she was one of the founders of ANHAD (Act Now for Harmony and Democracy), which she administers. Ma’am has campaigned against communalism and violation of human rights in the name of fighting terrorism, and was involved in exposing terror links of Hindutva forces. She was among the ninety-one women from India who figured in the list of 1,000 women nominated globally for the Nobel Peace Prize-2005. Hashmi ma’am has focused on issues of women’s political participation, adoption, gender justice, democracy, and secularism. She was awarded the Association for Communal Harmony in Asia Star Award for Communal Harmony in 2005, Aamil Smriti Samman in 2005, and the National Minority Rights Award 2008 by the National Minority Commission.

JAYAHARI KM

Jayahari KM (Hari) is India Country Coordinator, Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU), a program co-led by World Resources Insitute India. His primary responsibility is to coordinate FOLU India activities and work closely with FOLU India core partners and collaborations. He is one among the WRI India Directors who is leading FOLU programme.
In his career, Hari has worked in different capacities in institutions like Kerala Forest Research Institute, WWF India, Winrock International India till 2015, focusing on Natural Resource Management and Biodiversity Conservation. He has initiated and implemented many conservation programs primarily in Western Ghats and Eastern Himalayas. From 2015-17 he led Sahjeevan, an NGO working in pastoral and dry-land agriculture sectors, as an Executive Director. Prior to his current role at World Resources Insitute India, he played an instrumental role in building spatial databases in India, like India Observatory (www.indiaobservatory.org.in) at the Foundation of Ecological Security, and Restoration Opportunity Atlas of India (india.restorationatlas.org) at World Resources Insitute India. He also provided consultancy services to national and international organizations like Tetra Tech, ICLEI South Asia, etc.

Jayahari holds a PhD in Forestry (Wildlife Biology) from Forest Research Institute, Dehradun.

DEEPTI GULATI

Ms. Deepti Gulati is a renowned Nutrition & Public Health Specialist with over 45 years of experience. She serves as the Industry Chair Professor at the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) in Sonepat, Haryana, an institution recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India.

Her career began with teaching undergraduates at BBKDAV College for Women, Amritsar, followed by impactful roles including Deputy Director at NIPCCD, Nutrition Specialist at UN-WFP, and Head of Programmes at GAIN. At NIFTEM, her work focuses on Nutrition, Food Fortification, Public Health, Policy Advocacy, and Capacity Building.
Ms. Gulati has been instrumental in advancing the food fortification agenda in India, positively impacting over 950 million people. She notably led a project on Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition in Rajasthan, saving over 20,000 children’s lives. As an Advisor to FSSAI, she contributed to the Food Fortification Resource Centre and established the Centre of Excellence for Food Fortification at NIFTEM.
Her exemplary leadership and contributions have earned her several accolades, including the Food Fortification Leader of the Year (2023), Healthcare Changemaker Award (2023), and the Nutrition Leadership Excellence Award (2022), among others.
Ms. Gulati is a member of various national task forces on nutrition and has authored numerous papers and publications in her field.

Dr. Prabhjot Sodhi, with over 40 years’ of professional experience in the waste sector, presently is associated as Sr. Program Director, Circular Economy at Centre for Environment Education. Previously Head UNDP Circular Economy – he worked with multiple donors in the space of Circular Economy for plastics – like Coca Cola, Hindustan Unilever Limited, HDFC Bank, Nyara Energy and Coca Cola Foundation.
Dr. Prabhjot’s expertise combines sector strategies, systems thinking, materials flow, material recovery, business models and livelihood of informal sector. He addresses policy issues like EPR, partnership models with Governments and ULBs, Civil Society, Recyclers in the domain of waste value chain.

Sangeeta Singh advocates the cause of informal workers along with the rights of women and children. Singh started the Bihar chapter of FORCES: Forum for Crèche and Child Care Services in 2002 and since then she has been working for informal women workers and children between 0-6 years advocating their causes at various forums. She is the head of the street food vendor’s program at Nidan, focusing on their rights, capacity building and empowerment. Sangeeta Singh also coordinated the GRC project of Nidan in Delhi.
