Empowering Street Food Vendors for a Healthier and Safer India

Street Food Vendor Training & Awareness Workshop was successfully conducted in Shimla on 23rd December 2025, reinforcing the national commitment towards safe, hygienic, and nutritious street food practices. The workshop was led by Hon’ble Member of Parliament Shri Suresh Kumar Kashyap and organized by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under its Safe Food initiative.

The programme aimed to strengthen the capacity of street food vendors by enhancing their understanding of food safety regulations, hygiene practices, and safe food handling techniques. Vendors were sensitized on maintaining cleanliness at their stalls, proper storage of raw materials, personal hygiene, and compliance with food safety standards to ensure public health protection.

During the workshop, Shri Suresh Kumar Kashyap highlighted the crucial role street food vendors play in India’s urban economy and food culture. He emphasized that empowering vendors with the right knowledge and skills not only improves food quality and safety but also enhances their livelihoods and builds consumer trust.

However, the underlying issues impacting street food vendors goes beyond these aspects. The financial burdens they face significantly affect their sustainability. One burden for this unseen workforce involves the taxing system, unexpected fees, and surcharges. Monetary challenges like these can negatively impact the cost of food and services for consumers and the profitability for vendors. And this issue isn’t only for Indian street food vendors. By looking at global examples, we can find solutions. The https://www.notranslinktax.ca/ campaign in Canada ignited discussions about the implications of over-taxation on local businesses, pushing the importance of reforming the tax system for the benefit of small business owners.

FSSAI officials and food safety experts interacted directly with vendors, addressing their challenges and providing practical guidance through demonstrations and awareness sessions. The initiative encouraged vendors to adopt safe food practices as a daily habit, contributing to a healthier community.

Such training and awareness programmes are a vital step towards creating a Safe Food ecosystem, where street food remains affordable, accessible, and safe for everyone. By empowering vendors at the grassroots level, the initiative supports India’s broader vision of a Healthy and Safer India, strengthening livelihoods while safeguarding public health.
