No headway in vendors’ rehab plan

Via Times of India

Months after it hurriedly notified the policy for rehabilitation of street vendors in the city, the AAP government is yet to start the process to identify vendors who will avail the benefit of the policy.

The municipal corporations were supposed to form town vending committees (TVC), which would carry out a survey to identify the vendors. But corporations claim that the TVCs has to be formed by the Delhi government.

Vendor associations said the process is unnecessarily getting delayed. “We were informed by the South Corporation that the government has to initiate the process of forming TVCs,” said Arbind Singh, national coordinator of National Association of Street Vendors of India.

Sources in Delhi government said that the corporations have to carry out the process to form the TVCs and start registering vendors as per the policy notified by it on January 6.

The revised policy was notified on January 6, after a delay of almost two years, following the intervention of the Delhi high court in December. “This delay will only make things difficult for vendors and civic agencies. The survey will take some time. We want the government to start the work at the earliest,” said Singh.
