NASVI Street Food Program Attracts Student for Internships from Abroad

NASVI Summer Intern Experience 2014 – By Vaishnavi Walvekar

What drove me to NASVI at New Delhi was my Thesis project (Street Food Vending), that I am doing for my MFA in Industrial Design from Academy of Art University,San Francisco. The main objective and purpose of my Thesis by the end is to build a product or a system that is beneficial as well as economically feasible and viable for vendors. Apart from just the organization’s strong hold in India as the largest representative body for street vendors in India, I took up the opportunity of interning here to get the right guidance. I have joined NASVI as a Research Executive Intern aiming to support the opportunities presented in my Thesis.
Currently I am here to strengthen my thesis topic by conducting field research activities like interviews, surveys and case studies before I begin my Research phase of Thesis in San Francisco this Fall. I have been conducting research in ‘Sarojini Nagar Market’ as a part of an assignment given to me, documenting in the form of research data sheets for each vendor, including the street vendors profile, the kind of street foods vended, storage methods, disposal methods and a hygiene assessment survey to keep a tab on how  the vendors are responding to hygiene training camps and the safety kits provided to them as an initiative from NASVI. Apart from that,I have also been documenting in the form of images and videos to focus on issues that are the most rampant and predominant. After summarizing my findings, I will narrow down to present a design scope for the same which will conclude my research internship.
