In the recent eviction drive in the Acharya Niketan market, around 30 vendors have been evicted from the market and their goods & rehris have been confiscated by the local police.
NASVI intervened in the crisis at right time and talked to the local authorities, MCD officials, Assistant Commissioner of Police on behalf of the vendors and also supported the vendors to make an appeal in the Appellate Authority, which is assigned to redress grievances of street vendors.
It is to be noted that the area where these vendors used to sell their goods comes under the squatting zone declared by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi(MCD),In utter violation of guidelines, the vendors are continuously disturbed and harassed by the local police and the Market Associations. Regarding the implementation of National Policy for Street Vendors, the process of providing license and permanent space to vendors is still pending. As per the Delhi Special provisions Act, 2009 and Supreme Court orders, MCD or Police should not disturb the vendors until any concrete decision made on their grievance.
After the continuous efforts of NASVI, the vendors are restored in the market and they are permitted to sell their goods by the Appellate Authority until any decision has made on their case.
